Introduction video to this course:

Hey, it’s Noah and Flynn! In this course, we’re showing you how 2-step verification works and why we always use it. At uni, we’re logging into loads of accounts all the time - so having this extra layer of security means peace of mind. We use this every time we log in to see our university emails! As computer science students, we’re big believers in making small changes that have a huge impact on your online safety.

Why this is important?

Even strong passwords can be stolen. 2-step verification makes your account far more secure by asking for a second piece of information - like a code sent to your phone or a pop-up on an app - before letting anyone in. That means even if someone has your password, they can’t log in without your second step.
Trust us, it’s easier than it sounds - we’ll walk you through it slowly, and once it’s set up, you barely have to think about it again.
2-Step Verification - Video
In this video, we will break down how 2-step verification works, how to turn it on, and how it helps protect you from hackers - even if they have managed to gain access to your password.
You can follow along and switch on 2-step verification during the video if you’d like- it should only takes a couple minutes or so.

Step-by-step:

1. Learn what 2-step verification is: it's a security feature that asks for two things when logging in: your password, and something else only you have (like your phone).

2. Understand why it matters: even if someone steals your password, they still can’t get into your account without your second step.

3. See real examples: the second step might be a code sent by text, a push notification, or a code from an app.

4. Choose where to turn it on first, maybe start with your email, then add it to your bank, social media, and any shopping accounts.

5. Go to your account settings and look for “Security” or “2-Step Verification” or “Two-Factor Authentication.”

6. Follow the setup steps - most websites let you pick how you want to get your code (text message, app, email).

7. Add a backup method - this helps if you ever lose your phone. You might use backup codes, an email, or a second device.

8. Try it out, log out and log back in to see how it works.

9. Save your backup codes in a safe place in case you can’t get to your phone.

10. Repeat for other accounts as it’s a good habit and only takes a few minutes.

Just to recap...

Well done! You’ve learned what 2-step verification is, how to set it up, and why it’s one of the smartest things you can do to keep your accounts secure.
